Obsession Is Officially a Hair-Raising Horror

MOVIE NEWS – Because of extremely bloody violence, nudity, and profanity, Obsession has received a strict R rating in the United States.

The film was produced by Blumhouse, widely regarded as the most successful studio working in the genre, and Curry Barker’s horror feature has already earned a 95 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Stories built around the “be careful what you wish for” setup form a subgenre of their own within horror: some mystical object typically lures in its new owner, who foolishly asks the supernatural for something, gets the wish granted, and then watches events spiral into something nightmarish. The young protagonist of Obsession – played by Michael Johnston – is hopelessly in love with the girl he longs for – played by Inde Navarrette – and in an effort to make that dream come true, he turns to a mysterious magic wand. The paranormal help arrives exactly as expected, with the girl falling madly and uncontrollably in love with him, but from that moment on, all hell breaks loose, quite literally.

Critics have embraced Obsession because the film remains wildly entertaining and viciously funny even though it is obvious from the very beginning where the story is headed: the road to hell is paved with a whole lot of inventive ideas. Blumhouse seems pleased enough with the result that Barker is already hard at work there on his next feature. Titled Anything But Ghost, it will once again lead audiences into paranormal territory. Its story follows two morally dubious characters who pretend to be ghost hunters and keep fleecing gullible clients until they run into actual demons.
