The live-action Elden Ring film is very much alive, and production now appears to be right around the corner. Based on the first leaked set footage, Alex Garland is not making a watered-down fantasy version of FromSoftware’s world, but something that seems determined to mirror its atmosphere and visual identity with unusual precision.
When reports first began circulating last year about an Elden Ring movie with Alex Garland attached, it was easy to dismiss the whole thing as another adaptation headline that would eventually disappear into development limbo. Even after more credible outlets treated the project as real, there was still every reason to suspect it might end up as one of those grand announcements that never actually turns into a shoot. That skepticism is getting harder to maintain now, because filming looks close enough to touch, and social media has already started leaking glimpses of what appears to be the production’s physical set.
Two videos posted to TikTok gave fans their first look at scenery that seems to have been built with the game very firmly in mind. The footage shows a ruined church-like structure that strongly recalls the devastated religious sites seen across Limgrave, complete with worn stone surfaces, fractured arches, and a statue that many immediately linked to Marika. Around it sit overturned carts, torches, barrels, and other bits of environmental dressing that look less like vague fantasy props and more like objects pulled directly out of the Game of the Year-winning RPG from four years ago.
Fans Are Already Fixating on Just How Exact the Set Details Look
As Polygon noted, the response from Elden Ring players was immediate. Some focused on the statue in particular, arguing that it looked almost identical to its in-game counterpart, which only strengthened the impression that the filmmakers are paying close attention to the source material’s smallest visual cues. Others admitted they still struggle to imagine a feature film fully capturing the game’s storytelling power, but even those skeptics seemed encouraged by the level of fidelity on display, with Garland repeatedly coming up as the best possible choice to handle something this strange and delicate.
That optimism is not hard to understand. So far, the movie does not feel like one more cynical attempt by Hollywood to milk a famous title and hope the brand does the rest. It is being shepherded by Garland, one of the more distinctive filmmakers working today, and backed by A24, a studio that does not usually throw itself at this kind of property unless it sees something creatively worthwhile. The secrecy around the production only adds to that impression. If these images had not slipped out, the cameras might have started rolling before most people even realized the adaptation had advanced this far.
Current reports suggest principal photography could begin within days, possibly as early as this week. A formal announcement may not be far behind, and that could finally clarify what story the film intends to tell. Judging by the leaked set material, though, the adaptation appears to be set in the same broad era as the game itself, meaning after the Shattering rather than during it. As for the cast, Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, and Cailee Spaeny are all on board, but beyond that, the project is still keeping most of its cards hidden.
