MOVIE NEWS – Another particularly intriguing name has emerged in the search for the next James Bond: according to Richard Osman, Jack Lowden is genuinely being considered for the role of 007. The actor should be familiar not only to Battlefield 1 players, but also as River Cartwright, one of the stars of Apple TV+’s hit series Slow Horses.

Hollywood and audiences have spent years speculating about who might inherit the role of James Bond after Daniel Craig, and Jack Lowden has now returned to the spotlight. The 36-year-old Scottish actor has become internationally known as River Cartwright, one of the central characters in Slow Horses, while gaming audiences may also recognize him from Battlefield 1. Television presenter and author Richard Osman discussed Lowden on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, claiming that a source had given him firm information that the actor really is among the Bond candidates.

Osman was also quick to exercise caution, as he has previously heard supposedly definitive Bond information that ultimately proved incorrect. Still, he eventually named the actor directly on the show: “The name I’ve heard is Jack Lowden.” Osman said his source told him “for definite” that Lowden is in the mix, although neither Amazon MGM Studios nor the filmmakers behind Bond have confirmed that a final decision has been made.

From Slow Horses and Battlefield 1 All the Way to James Bond?

Lowden is not entirely unfamiliar to video game audiences either. In his only video game role to date, he portrayed T. E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, in DICE’s 2016 title Battlefield 1. The historical figure played an important role in one of the single-player campaign’s War Stories, specifically the Nothing Is Written storyline.

One of the most important roles of Lowden’s television career is River Cartwright in Apple TV+’s spy drama Slow Horses, where he stars alongside Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas. Lowden also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and plays Mr. Darcy opposite Emma Corrin’s Elizabeth Bennet in Netflix’s new Pride and Prejudice limited series. He additionally portrayed Forodwaith Sauron in an episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and voiced Gunnar in this year’s Rogue Trooper movie.

Lowden’s Scottish background would add another interesting element to the casting, as he would become only the second Scottish actor after Sean Connery to play James Bond on the big screen. Ian Fleming’s James Bond character is himself Scottish as well. Several other names continue to circulate as possible candidates, including Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jacob Elordi, Theo James, Tom Francis, and Josh O’Connor. Amazon MGM Studios previously said only that the search for the next Bond was underway and that it would not comment on casting speculation.

The next James Bond movie will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose credits include the Dune films, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival. Daniel Craig portrayed 007 across five movies, concluding his run with 2021’s No Time to Die. Whether Slow Horses and Battlefield 1 actor Jack Lowden will actually become his successor remains unconfirmed, but Osman’s information suggests his name may represent considerably more than ordinary fan speculation.
