He’s saying something about the game, which is due to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on 19 November, that simply doesn’t seem true.
Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, recently appeared as a guest on CNBC’s Squawk Box, where he discussed the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI and the company’s partnership with Netflix. Zelnick noted that the game’s price could have been higher (as analysts have debated for a long time and fans have feared), but ultimately, Take-Two and Rockstar aim to exceed expectations consistently in terms of value.
When asked which of the two Grand Theft Auto VI editions is being pre-ordered more, Zelnick revealed that it’s the Premium version, though he acknowledged that this could change in the future. The interviewer also asked Zelnick about the time-limited exclusive extended trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to air on Netflix on 27 August. Zelnick avoided questions about the show’s content, but gave a lengthy answer to the question of whether they would consider joining Netflix if the streaming company made them an offer.
“We’ve set the price of the regular edition and the Premium Edition of Grand Theft Auto VI at $80 and $100 respectively. I think most people felt that, if we wanted to, we had a great deal of pricing power. Our job, though, is to always deliver way more value to the consumer than we charge. We want to do that repeatedly. We understand that the consumer experience is the intersection of the product itself and the price paid for it. So we want people to be thrilled and we would never want them to feel that it’s out of their reach.
Both have been pre-ordered at an equal rate, although the premium edition is proving more popular. This may be because the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering. You’ll have to ask Ted and Greg about where they want to go with that, though. Historically, I don’t think Netflix has made big acquisitions. They’ve grown organically and done a great job. As for us, I don’t know. We are very proud of the way we have built this company independently. We’re now the largest pure-play public company in the sector worldwide. We expect to generate over $8 billion in revenue this year. We generate profits year in, year out. I don’t mean to imply that that’s easy or even predictable. We have to work hard every day. But if any company deserves to be independent, I think it’s us,” Zelnick said.
“Well, that would indeed be a world-shaking acquisition. At the moment, however, there’s no indication that this will happen, although closer cooperation is certainly conceivable. Besides, it’s clear that they removed content to encourage players to purchase the more expensive version, which was probably the base edition to begin with.
