The rumors have now turned into something official. Microsoft has announced that Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 will air on April 16 at 7:00 PM, meaning the next entry in the post-apocalyptic shooter saga is getting a dedicated showcase. In other words, players will soon get their first proper look at the new game from 4A Games.
Microsoft is clearly not slowing down its 2026 event schedule. After the January Xbox Developer Direct, the March Xbox Partner Preview, and the already confirmed Xbox Games Showcase in June, the company has now added another separate broadcast to the calendar. This one will focus entirely on Metro 2039, the next video game chapter set in Dmitry Glukhovsky’s post-apocalyptic universe. According to the announcement, the presentation will be a full digital event and will offer a world-premiere look at the new shooter experience.
Once again, 4A Games and Deep Silver are joining forces to send players back into a devastated world where survivors continue to struggle for life in the tunnels of Moscow after nuclear catastrophe. As detailed by Xbox Wire, the event will provide a deeper look at the title and confirm that it is the fourth main installment in the Metro franchise. That alone makes it a major moment for fans who have been waiting a long time to see where the series goes next.
The Fourth Main Installment in the Metro Franchise
This is undeniably an important moment for fans of Glukhovsky’s world. Metro 2033 in 2010, Metro: Last Light in 2013, and Metro Exodus in 2019 all proved that the series could deliver not only atmosphere, but also real survival tension and strong world-building. That legacy was later extended with the VR detour Metro Awakening, released in 2024 and developed by Vertigo Games. Since then, however, things had gone relatively quiet around 4A Games, which makes this official reveal especially significant.
The story now continues with a completely new experience that appears determined to capture once again the pressure, fear, and constant sense of danger that defined Glukhovsky’s original novels. Microsoft says the stream will begin on April 16 at 7:00 PM, and viewers will be able to watch it live through Xbox’s official YouTube channel. So whatever uncertainty remained around the future of Metro, that part is now over, because the series is officially back.
