TECH NEWS – Old, clunky monitors can be a good starting point for building something if you’re the adventurous type.
A Reddit user turned a decades-old CRT screen into a fully functional computer. Though he was unable to revive the old monitor, he had other plans. He picked it up in a state of disrepair from an electronics dump. He decided to turn it into a PC-building project, which might seem challenging, but not to this Reddit user. He planned to cram full-size desktop components into a CRT monitor case. He used a 17-inch CRT monitor case to build the PC. While a CRT monitor may seem spacious enough, its uneven surface makes perfectly fitting flat components like the motherboard, GPU, and case fans challenging. Nevertheless, the user managed to install seven case fans. Four were used for intake, and three were used for exhaust.

He had to remove the original CRT screen and install a 17.3-inch laptop display with a 165-Hz refresh rate and 1440p resolution, resulting in sharper image quality. The PC was built around an AMD Ryzen 5 7600X processor mounted on an MSI B650 Gaming Plus motherboard. This standard ATX motherboard allows for easier expandability; however, installation was difficult due to space constraints.
This CRT monitor clearly has enough space for cabling and other components, as a Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card equipped with a triple-fan cooler has been installed. Even after installing all the components, it is evident that there is still enough room to ensure proper ventilation. The case has adequate ventilation and is equipped with several 120 mm fans, so the user reported satisfactory temperatures.
Overall, this was a great DIY project that demonstrates how building a PC can be a highly creative endeavor. If you approach it with enough creativity, there won’t be any major problems.
