Based on internal testing, it appears that Rebel Wolves slightly underestimated the scope of their action RPG.
Ever since the game was announced, it has been clear that The Blood of Dawnwalker will not be as expansive as The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. This makes sense since Rebel Wolves is smaller than CD Projekt RED was when it created its masterpiece. But exactly how much content can players expect in the full game? Creative Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz revealed that The Blood of Dawnwalker ended up being bigger than the studio originally planned. The initial goal was an average playtime of 40 hours, but with all the content in place and testing underway, the average now ranges between 50 and 70 hours, presumably depending on how much time players spend exploring Vale Sangora.
“It’s funny because when we first started working on it, we planned for 40 hours. Right now, the average is around 50 hours, but it depends on the difficulty level, how picky you are, how much you explore and upgrade your gear, etc. Recently, a few people on our team finished the game, and their experiences differed greatly. Some played for 50 hours, while others played for around 70,” Tomaszkiewicz said.
The shortest playtime is similar to that of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. According to HowLongToBeat.com, it takes an average of 51.5 hours to complete a story-focused playthrough of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. However, CD Projekt RED’s game had much more side content, so a full completion could take up to 170 hours. Nevertheless, considering that this is the first installment of a franchise that Rebel Wolves hopes will become a series, this is by no means a bad result. It’s certainly more than Obsidian‘s two latest action RPGs, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, have shown. A full evil playthrough isn’t just possible, it’s something the developers would love to see players do.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is set to release on September 3 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
