The Sinking City 2: A Bigger, Nastier, More Survival-Driven Lovecraft Nightmare Is Coming

Frogwares has finally narrowed down the release window for The Sinking City 2: the Lovecraft-inspired open-world survival horror game will arrive in summer 2026 with a larger explorable area, redesigned combat, and a stronger horror focus.

Although their ordeal was not widely publicized, Frogwares’ struggle to reclaim what was rightfully theirs was incredibly difficult. The Ukrainian studio not only had to face the Russian invasion of Ukraine, its homeland, which forced it to relocate employees, but also clashed with Nacon, publisher of the first The Sinking City, over the rights to that game. Now, having won that battle and moving toward a more ambitious future with The Sinking City 2, the Ukrainian developers have finally revealed the release window for this open-world survival horror game, while also showcasing new gameplay focused on exploration, combat, and supernatural creatures from Lovecraft’s world. Moving away from the first installment released in 2019, The Sinking City 2 takes us to Arkham, one of the most important cities created by the Providence writer and a cornerstone of the Cthulhu Mythos. Although, in the American author’s imagination, the city on the banks of the Miskatonic River has endured all kinds of calamities, this time we will visit a flooded, nearly deserted version of it, where only a few disturbed survivors and the greatest horrors the human mind can withstand remain.

In this setting, Frogwares dispenses with the first game’s protagonist, Charles Reed, and places Calvin Rafferty, an occult adventurer, at the center of the story, essentially serving as an appetizer for the cultists, the Mi-Go, and the Slither. The latter is a new creature created by Frogwares, not canonical to Lovecraft, but perfectly suited to this world: it possesses and twists the bodies of the dead, turning them into puppets under its control. As in Lovecraft’s writings, however, no character remains still: Rafferty will see his partner, Faye, fall into a state of lethargy after a failed supernatural ritual, forcing the protagonist to search the city for answers.

The Open World Of The Sinking City 2 Is Not Just A Backdrop, It Is More Than That

In this case, The Sinking City 2 expands on what its predecessor introduced, offering a larger and more cohesive open world. According to the Ukrainian studio, the sequel features a more substantial and in-depth exploration and resource management system. Players will be able to explore ruined mansions, flooded markets, and abandoned hospitals on foot or by boat, searching for ammunition, crafting materials, or bandages for when the Slither beat them senseless. That will probably happen more than once. As befits a game with a noir atmosphere, The Sinking City 2 has built its exploration and world immersion around two types of players: those who want to be swept along by the story, and those looking for a deeper detective experience. We will be able to explore the environment, gather clues, and solve both mandatory and optional puzzles, with the latter allowing us to uncover secrets or better weapons. In addition, there will be side missions involving characters in the area who are still alive, leading us to discover more about what is happening in Arkham.

The Combat System Has Been Redesigned And Is Now More Realistic And Violent

This is not a walking simulator like the most recent Lovecraft-inspired game, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. Frogwares is sticking with a combat system based on firearms and melee attacks. However, as the studio confirmed back in 2025, the combat system has undergone significant changes to address the original’s shortcomings and make it “compelling and satisfying”. We will still have to manage our resources and ammunition, but now enemy movement will be more realistic, and the impact of blows and weapon recoil will be more tangible depending on the type of weapon being used. “We’re adding a ‘realistic wound’ system that clearly shows where and how hard a weapon has hit an enemy. Usually in games, when you shoot an enemy, the impact points are covered with a blood decal or something similar, but in our case, the enemies have a detailed second layer of bone and muscle tissue that will show up when a bullet penetrates their skin. This second layer covers the entire body, so no matter where you shoot, it will always have those realistic (and bloody) impact effects”, the studio added to the English-language publication.

Frogwares explained that The Sinking City 2 represents a new direction for the studio, with a stronger focus on horror and survival rather than archetypal action. “And, of course, we’ve made sure that everything is accompanied by a mature and impactful narrative, something our fans appreciate. This time, the story is more personal for the protagonist, while still offering Frogwares’ signature take on morally ambiguous themes and Lovecraftian themes”, said Alexander Gresko, game director at Frogwares, in the press release shared with the media. For Frogwares, this project represents a major creative leap for the team, as it seeks to solidify its vision of the genre and gauge player response to this new interpretation of its Lovecraftian universe. The ambitious game is being developed with Unreal Engine 5, the same engine used for the first installment, and will be released in summer 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, although the exact date has yet to be confirmed.
