Path Of Exile 2: Someone Needs To Tell Them To Slow Down

Return of the Ancients will be the last major update before version 1.0 of Path of Exile 2, adding more than 50 hours of new endgame content, new story missions, bosses, a rune system, and redesigned leagues that once again reshape the ARPG.

We have reached the point where almost nothing about Path of Exile 2 can truly be surprising anymore. What Grinding Gear Games is doing with this ARPG remains incredible, but the studio has trained players so well to expect their assumptions to be shattered with every new announcement that another massive update with more than 50 hours of endgame content now feels almost like just another one of their wild moves. “We were completely naive to think we could leave early access in six months, or something like that”, joked Path of Exile 2 director Jonathan Rogers in an exclusive interview with 3DJuegos. It makes sense when you see the level of dedication this New Zealand team is putting into one of the most anticipated action RPGs of recent years.

Alongside the design of its massive campaign, the creators of Path of Exile 2 have been constantly redesigning and improving the game’s endgame content to satisfy their fans. Rogers himself admits that “there were a lot of things that were wrong and needed improvement.” The answer to all of this is Return of the Ancients, a massive update that completely reinvents the endgame, adding six new story missions, 15 spectacularly designed bosses, a new crafting system, and new Ascendancy classes to further enhance the incredibly fun combat system of Path of Exile 2. There are so many changes that, once again, it is almost impossible not to be impressed by GGG’s work.

Runes Are Coming To Path Of Exile 2

Many players need the story to be an integral part of the experience, even in games like Path of Exile. Until now, however, once the campaign was over, the only excuse left was often to kill enemies, get better gear, and kill again. That is going to change in Path of Exile 2. “We aimed to improve the narrative in the endgame. Before, the campaign told the story well, but the endgame didn’t”, Jonathan Rogers said. “By adding a story to each league, we can also ‘tutorialize’ how to interact with each mechanic. And I think this will drastically increase the number of players who attempt to complete the endgame.” That is how the new Runes of Aldur league was born.

As its name suggests, this is where we will discover the new rune system, which allows us to create items of incredible power, naturally with a condition attached. Activating the monoliths to bring the runes to life will unleash hordes of monsters upon us, and their power is directly tied to the runes used. The more runes we use, and the stronger they are, the greater the dangers we will face. “This creates a dynamic risk-reward system in which the most powerful creation combinations lead to the most perilous encounters.”

As we explore this new content, we will uncover a deeper story behind the forging, leading us to discover new powers and defensive resources that will force us to play differently while taking all these new possibilities into account. As seen in the reveal trailer, there are unique new environments and terrifying bosses that will make things extremely difficult. As Rogers explained, “When telling a story, sometimes you change the mechanics. And sometimes the mechanics influence the story”, which is exactly what is happening with this new content.

The Strength That Will Push Your Abilities To The Limit

While watching the presentation of all this new content, it is easy to keep repeating the same thing: this is incredible. Everything you thought you knew about the endgame of Path of Exile 2 is changing again in a major way, incorporating a huge number of new features that immediately make you want to explore them. One of the most striking is the gigantic ancient fortress that rises from the earth, serving as the starting point for several new stories in this revamped endgame. “The Atlas has been transformed into a fully explorable endgame world, now filled with fixed objectives in all directions that offer clear destinations to discover and pursue, while the towers remain essential to revealing what lies beyond”, reads the description of this content.

And there it is: the Fortress. A colossal structure where players can expect deadly traps, endless waves of monsters, and incredibly powerful bosses with new combat mechanics, all in line with what the Path of Exile saga has trained its fans to expect. “In this expansion, we have tons of them, and all the final bosses are insane”, Jonathan Rogers said. “We made sure that every mechanic is avoidable, something we didn’t always do in the first game, and that’s what gives it that action game feel.” The Grinding Gear creative also warned that “there are still many surprises we didn’t show in the live stream.”

Perhaps the most surprising part is that the creators of Path of Exile have used this update to completely redesign the four leagues introduced during early access: Delirium, Breach, Ritual, and Expedition now receive new storylines, expanded gameplay mechanics, and tons of customization options. As usual, two new Ascendancy classes are also being added: the Spirit Walker, who draws on nature spirits to fight, and the Martial Artist, a Monk variant who creates spiritual manifestations to strike enemies.

The Release Of Path Of Exile 2 Is Getting Closer

All these new features, described by the developers as “the last major content update before version 1.0”, will be available on May 29. “It addresses aspects that Path of Exile 2 really needed, especially the endgame, which was never quite right”, Jonathan Rogers explained when discussing the expansion. “We believe these changes are necessary to ensure the system is good and sustainable in the future.” So the question is clear: when will we finally see the long-awaited final version of Path of Exile 2?

The GGG team has not yet given a definitive date, but it promises that we will have it after ExileCon in November. It will be at this major event that the final details of the official launch of Path of Exile 2 will finally be revealed, and as confirmed years ago, the game will once again be free-to-play. Until then, there will still be plenty of time to try out all the character classes and challenges offered by this spectacular ARPG, which already provides hundreds of hours of entertainment even in its Early Access state.
