An ambitious mod has already completed all of its quest writing, but the modders do not want to publicly commit to a release window.
The volunteer team behind Skywind (which is working on an ambitious fan-made recreation of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in the Skyrim engine) has released a new video on the state of development. This is their first such update since 2024, and followers of the total conversion mod will be pleased to hear that, based on the numbers, the project is closer to completion than ever. All roles for Skywind’s roughly 3,000 NPCs have now been fully cast, thanks to the help of nearly 300 volunteer voice actors. More than 92% of the NPCs have already been fully recorded, meaning the voice acting pipeline, historically one of the most labour-intensive parts of projects of this size, is almost finished.
As for writing, every quest in the base game has been fully written and finalized, and is currently being implemented into the game. The 2D and writing departments have completed all work required for the base game and are already planning ahead for future DLCs (which will not be included in the initial release). The level design team has also made major progress, with 10 of the 13 exterior world regions 90-100% complete. In the 3D department, 28 of the 30 level kits (asset collections used to build individual locations) are complete, with the remaining two well on the way.
According to the development team, all of Morrowind’s core gameplay mechanics have already been fully implemented in Skywind, including the full character class system and the classic probe-disarmable traps. The animation team is currently working on the final custom creature rigs, while underwater combat has seen significant improvements. On the audio side, the Skywind OST now contains more than 130 original tracks. Visually, the weather VFX system has been overhauled using real-world lighting data and custom sky textures, a significant technical leap for a fan project that is fundamentally running on a 15-year-old engine.
Despite the remarkable progress, Skywind remains a volunteer-driven project with no set release date, and the team is actively recruiting contributors in several key areas. They need 3D artists to create game-ready clothing items, asset implementers to bring finished assets into the engine, sound mixers to mix and master voice lines, programmers for NPC scheduling and behaviour systems, and quality assurance testers to identify bugs and check consistency and stability. Anyone who wants to contribute can find more information on the official website (https://tesrskywind.com/) or join the project’s Discord server (https://discord.gg/skywind).
Skywind’s sister project, Skyblivion, still appears to be closer to release. It was originally supposed to launch last year, but was delayed to 2026, though we still do not know exactly when it will become available.
