The developers are working to implement the requested changes as soon as possible, which is always a good idea.
Although OtherSide Entertainment, the developers of Thick as Thieves, say they are very pleased with our thieving skills and how much we are enjoying the game, they acknowledge that there is room for improvement and intend to continue rolling out updates. Following the first update, which added a field-of-view slider, the option to disable motion blur, and a few other useful tweaks, the developers promised a second update by the middle of next week. This update includes features like the ability to remap buttons, which is essential in a stealth game. In Thief: The Dark Project, the first thing everyone does is remap the buttons, but there is a major omission: the ability to adjust or disable the timers.
Thick as Thieves is a classic “vent-crawling” game that can be played solo or in co-op mode. In the game, you break into buildings to steal loot and make your escape. Every mission has a general time limit, usually 45 or 30 minutes, but that is not the real challenge. As soon as you complete any objective on a level’s list of goals (even if you are just stealing one item from a three-piece set or completing a secondary objective, such as collecting a certain amount of loot, which you can easily trigger by accidentally picking up an extra valuable item), an eight-minute countdown begins.
The mission will fail if the countdown ends before we find the magical exit door, which appears randomly when the countdown begins. If we do not complete the first two steps of the three-step task, we will have to start over on our next trip. It is frustrating to realize that no matter how effectively you have played up to that point, all your hard work can be undone by a particularly difficult-to-reach exit. Since Thick as Thieves was originally a multiplayer game, there is no option to save during the mission.
At least Thick as Thieves makes the mission timer visible. Previously, while the eight-minute countdown appeared at the top of the screen, the longer timer remained hidden until it was almost over. From now on, the longer timer will appear when you press the Tab key to open the map. This is a good change. However, it is not the kind of change that will bring many people back to the game. We fear that the annoying eight-minute timer and the fact that you have to steal items that were part of an unfinished three-item objective during those eight minutes are essential elements of the game design for the developers.
