Steven Spielberg’s New Sci-Fi Film Makes Box Office History

MOVIE NEWS – Ever since Jaws, it has been clear that the summer movie season belongs to Steven Spielberg, since his shark thriller essentially created the idea of the Great Summer Blockbuster. The 29-year-old master’s latest sci-fi film, Disclosure Day, opened with a $94 million worldwide weekend gross, marking a historic milestone in the director’s career.

It became the biggest opening weekend of Spielberg’s career among films based on original screenplays, surpassing 1998’s Saving Private Ryan. In other words, the director has not simply returned to the summer movie season: he has immediately delivered a result that stands out even within his own already towering body of work.

The film currently holds an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have stressed that Spielberg remains a master of visual storytelling, with large-scale action sequences that could easily be used as textbook examples of what a summer blockbuster is supposed to deliver.

American critics are also highly enthusiastic about the film. According to USA Today, for example, Disclosure Day goes far beyond simple spectacle, because it examines how people’s faith can be shaken when they discover that the facts most important to the world have been kept from them for a very long time. Namely, that extraterrestrials have been here for ages.

Critics broadly agree that Emily Blunt delivers the performance of her life in the lead role, while Josh O’Connor and Colman Domingo have also been praised for their work.
