Don’t Nod: Is the Studio in Jeopardy After Losing Its Financial Backing?

The gaming industry’s situation remains weak when even a studio of this caliber has run into financial trouble.

Don’t Nod, the studio behind the recently released Aphelion and the first two Life is Strange games, is currently trying to secure its future after Tencent decided not to continue short-term investments in the story-driven studio. After French journalist Gauthier “Gautoz” Andres claimed that the studio was quickly approaching the point where it would run out of money, Don’t Nod responded to the claims.

Although the studio did not state that the situation was as severe as Andres described it, it confirmed that Tencent had decided not to provide additional funding for the studio’s next project. It added that the studio is exploring multiple funding options, while acknowledging that securing financing is a major challenge in the current state of the gaming industry. This situation is significantly different from where Don’t Nod was five years ago, when Tencent invested 30 million euros in the studio.

“As disclosed in our latest financial report, the going concern statement reflects an accounting requirement under applicable reporting frameworks and standard disclosure requirements for listed companies. It is based on information available at the reporting date and does not take into account the potential impact of the various financing and cash-preservation initiatives currently being pursued by the company… Don’t Nod is focused on extending its cash horizon through a combination of financing initiatives, disciplined cash management, and an optimized operating structure, while continuing to adapt its cost base to market conditions. At this stage, we have no further comment beyond the information already disclosed in the company’s latest financial report”Don’t Nod said in a statement to Game Developer.

Don’t Nod has several projects in progress, some of which could lead to a stronger and safer future, or provide enough support to launch the game codenamed Project P14. Making a living from game development is about ensuring that we earn enough to make the next game. Nothing beyond that can be guaranteed. Hopefully, Don’t Nod can successfully weather the current difficult period, and we will not have to watch another talented studio suffer further layoffs or even close its doors completely.

It is unclear how their latest game, Aphelion, performed, although Don’t Nod acknowledged that their previous game, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, did not meet sales expectations.

She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
