MOVIE NEWS – Jason Statham’s 2025 action thriller A Working Man did not come close to matching the theatrical breakout of The Beekeeper, but it is becoming increasingly successful on digital platforms and streaming charts. David Ayer’s film has climbed into the upper reaches of HBO Max’s global rankings while its nearly $100 million theatrical haul has already more than doubled its reported production budget.
Jason Statham’s recent box office record has been somewhat uneven, but he remains one of the most reliable action stars in the home-entertainment market. The Beekeeper was the clear breakout, earning more than $160 million worldwide and already securing a sequel scheduled for 2027. Statham also starred in Meg 2: The Trench, which could not replicate the China-driven performance of its predecessor but still grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. Other recent Statham projects, including Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Shelter, stalled at roughly the $50 million mark globally. One more Statham vehicle, however, landed somewhere between a full-blown hit and a clear disappointment in theaters before gradually turning into a genuine home-video powerhouse.
According to FlixPatrol, A Working Man is among the most-watched movies on HBO Max’s global chart this week, several months after it also dominated Prime Video’s international rankings. The movie remains strong in the PVOD market as well, while Shelter has also begun recovering on the digital front in recent weeks. A Working Man arrived in theaters in early 2025, a release window that increasingly appears to suit Statham particularly well: The Beekeeper opened in early 2024, while its sequel is set for early 2027. Statham’s 2025 release ultimately fell short of The Beekeeper’s box office record, but still earned nearly $100 million worldwide against a reported $40 million budget.
A Working Man reunited Statham with The Beekeeper director David Ayer. The film received mixed reviews and currently sits at 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “An efficient action flick that delivers on the meat and potatoes of a Jason Statham vehicle while skimping out on the personality, A Working Man clocks in and out without much fuss or flair.” Audiences were much more enthusiastic, with the site’s Verified Hot score standing at 87%, which may be a major reason why the film has performed so well after its theatrical run. For Ayer, The Beekeeper and A Working Man have both helped him reclaim a place among Hollywood’s more sought-after directors after the poor critical response to Suicide Squad pushed him out of favor for several years. He is now working on the Brad Pitt-led survival thriller Heart of the Beast.
