The rumors were right again: Capcom has moved up the release date for the franchise’s newest installment.

The Japanese publisher confirmed on X what had previously circulated only as a rumor. Onimusha: Way of the Sword was originally scheduled to launch on September 25, but Capcom has moved the release forward, following a similar strategy to the one it used for Pragmata.

The sword-focused action game will now be playable on September 4. The decision makes sense, as September has an extremely crowded release calendar, with games including Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, and The Blood of Dawnwalker all scheduled for that period. Arriving at the start of the month may give Onimusha more room to receive its own attention.

The game takes players through bloody and intense sword battles in a twisted dark fantasy version of Edo-period Kyoto. The historic Japanese capital has been transformed by malevolent clouds of Malice, and every location is filled with mystery, danger, and intrigue.

The story follows a samurai wielding the mystical Oni Gauntlet. The relic grants him the power needed to defeat the underworld monsters known as Genma. Through brutal, blood-soaked battles, the warrior searches for his own reason to fight while the fate awaiting him at the end of the journey gradually comes into focus.

The first Onimusha game, released in 2001, told the story of a young warrior in war-torn feudal Japan. After gaining the power of the Oni, he became an Onimusha and fought against the Genma, who sought to conquer the world.

The game’s Issen critical-counter system and satisfying swordplay became defining pillars of the series. Characters and events inspired by real history, combined with a dark fantasy setting, created a widely acclaimed story that later spawned several successful games and an original Netflix anime.

The Onimusha series has now sold more than 8.7 million copies worldwide. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
