You can claim the game’s installer for free during a summer sale, burn it to a disc if you wish, and return to it any time for offline play.
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is a tactical fleet simulator, which essentially means it is a sci-fi strategy game with real-time battles set in the cold black emptiness of space. It has earned a strong reputation for itself, even if it is showing its age now.
More importantly, however, it is free on GOG until July 6 as part of the store’s ongoing summer sale. The setup is classic: sixty years after the disaster of Noah’s Ark, humanity’s first colony ship, an uneasy peace reigns among the corporations controlling the Solar System.
That lasts until a shocking discovery throws the balance of power into chaos, and we, in the role of famous young captain Marcus Cromwell, are thrown into the fire of a new conflict.
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident offers a variety of mission types tied together by a developed narrative that pushes the story forward, much like Wing Commander, even if you lose a battle.
The GOG edition also includes a fully documented mod kit with a model viewer, sample models from the game, and a guide to creating your own mods. Its 4.4/5 user rating on GOG is not insignificant either.
The experience may vary from player to player, but for a game more than twenty years old, it still looks very good. The charming Homeworld-like style is especially appealing, particularly when the Freespace aesthetic appears here and there.
The giveaway is part of GOG’s summer sale. Steam’s summer sale may be the biggest, but GOG’s extremely cheap offers have always been worth loving too.
A wide range of games are available at low prices, including The Witcher Enhanced Edition, Alan Wake, Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, RollerCoaster Tycoon Deluxe, Hitman: Blood Money, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Freedom Fighters, Freedom Force, Darklands, Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, and Arx Fatalis.
GOG’s summer sale runs through July 9. It is also worth noting that GOG now supports Hungarian forints.
