Cyberpunk 2077 Has Now Sold Over 40 Million Copies!

After a difficult start, the Night City-set adventure has added many millions of sales to its original results.

It is hard to imagine now, but Cyberpunk 2077 was a complete disaster when it launched in 2020. The PC version was not relatively bad, but the console release was so awful that Sony literally pulled it from PlayStation Store.

The situation became so dire that a few months after launch, when CD Projekt RED had only just begun to clean up the chaos it had caused, we suggested that it should simply fix the bugs and move on.

We mention all this because that was then, and this is now. Today, Cyberpunk 2077 holds a Very Positive user rating on Steam and has surpassed 40 million copies sold.

“Forty million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best: creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years. It’s a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this fall.” co-CEO Michał Nowakowski wrote on X.

It is a fairly typical piece of corporate celebration, but it is also true. In an industry where companies often simply write off the loss if a new game fails at launch, CDPR kept working and eventually turned Cyberpunk 2077 into a genuinely outstanding game.

It then completed the experience with a brilliantly impressive expansion. We have said several times that the game’s redemption story was finished, but CDPR continued, perhaps in part because the studio’s leadership still does not entirely believe it.

“I’m not 100% convinced that we went through the full redemption arc. I am convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that is understandable. But I hope we will be able to win it back with The Witcher IV, or whatever game follows it.” Nowakowski said in June.

A significant portion of Cyberpunk 2077’s sales can be attributed to pre-release hype. Despite its countless issues, the game sold 13 million copies in only ten days.

There may be a lesson in that, but probably not. Cyberpunk 2077 still trails far behind The Witcher 3, which recently crossed 65 million copies sold.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
