It’s ridiculous that it’s now considered news when a AAA game is released on disc.

Following a controversial announcement earlier this month that PlayStation would be discontinuing the production of physical media, Sony Santa Monica, the developer of God of War, has confirmed that the next installment in the franchise will be available on disc. The news, which came in the form of a tweet stating that God of War: Laufey will be available on disc, also appears to have revealed the release date of the new installment. Since Sony set January 2028 as the end date for producing physical disc games, Santa Monica Studio’s statement strongly suggests that God of War: Laufey will be released next year.

Last week, Sony announced that, starting in January 2028, all new PlayStation 5 (and, let’s be honest, PlayStation 6) games will be available exclusively in digital format on the PlayStation Store and at retailers. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if the PlayStation Store were to gain a complete monopoly. Only games released in 2027 or earlier will be eligible for physical disc re-releases. The announcement regarding discs was posted in a thread related to the God of War: Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con, likely in an effort to soften the negative sentiment surrounding the rule change. News of Sony’s decision to discontinue disc production has sparked fierce criticism among fans of physical media. A petition calling on Sony to reconsider the decision has gathered more than 285,000 signatures so far.

God of War: Laufey was announced last month during a State of Play livestream, where Santa Monica Studio showcased over 20 minutes of gameplay. Described as the next chapter in the God of War series, the game features Faye (Laufey the Just) as its protagonist. She is Kratos’s Scandinavian wife and Atreus’s mother and lost her life during events preceding the plot of the 2018 God of War.
