Although Sony has abandoned the PC market by releasing ports of its single-player games, emulation is slowly gaining traction here as well.
More than a week after the original announcement, disappointment over Sony’s decision regarding physical PlayStation discs has subsided. Although fans had threatened to leave the ecosystem or boycott PlayStation Plus, many have moved past the issue. However, the issue appears to have stirred up the emulation community. Following the announcement, there has been rapid and unexpected progress in PlayStation 5 emulation recently.
The emulator in question is called SharpEmu. According to Twitter posts, the 2D platformer Dreaming Sarah is already running on it. In fact, the emulator appears capable of launching Demon’s Souls Remake, although the game doesn’t progress much beyond the title screen. Another PlayStation 5 emulator, Kyty, is currently in development. Work on it has been ongoing for several years, and, like RPCSX, it is one of three promising emulators in development. Currently, this emulator can only boot the PlayStation 5’s safe mode and run test samples.
All three emulators are under development, but SharpEmu is reportedly making rapid progress. PlayStation’s decision to phase out physical discs has particularly motivated the community to pick up the pace. The situation is similar to a few years ago when ShadPS4 saw rapid development thanks to the community’s motivation to bring Bloodborne to PC since Sony wasn’t willing to bring it to the PlayStation 5.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see if PlayStation 5 emulation develops as quickly as PlayStation 4 emulation has over the past few years. This would be significant, especially since PlayStation has been moving away from PC ports lately. For example, there’s a good chance that God of War Laufey won’t have a PC version.
