Ryan Hurst will reportedly no longer play Kratos in Amazon’s live-action God of War series after tearing a biceps while filming a stunt. Four episodes were already completed, meaning the recast could trigger extensive reshoots and delay the two-season production.

Game Rant reports that Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to find a new actor for Kratos after Hurst suffered a serious injury on the Vancouver set. The actor was announced as the lead in January 2026, and principal photography began soon afterward, with Prime Video confirming in late February that filming was fully underway.

According to Deadline, Hurst tore a biceps while performing a stunt in June and underwent surgery immediately. Although this kind of injury can generally heal in four to six months, the extreme physical demands of playing Kratos could keep him from returning at full strength for as long as a year. The studios therefore reportedly made the difficult decision to recast the role rather than suspend production indefinitely.

Four completed episodes may have to be reworked

The timing makes the change especially costly. Four episodes had reportedly been completed before Hurst was injured, so his replacement will need to reshoot at least some scenes opposite Callum Vinson, the 12-year-old actor playing Atreus. Production is now expected to restart in mid-fall, most likely in October 2026.

The disruption may extend beyond footage that directly features Kratos. Prime Video’s adaptation focuses on the Norse era of the games, where the relationship between Kratos and Atreus drives the story. Reusing Vinson’s existing material could become difficult if the young actor visibly changes before cameras roll again, which raises the possibility that scenes without Kratos may also need to be filmed again.

No replacement has been announced

Neither the studios nor Hurst have officially confirmed the injury or the recasting, and no successor has been named. If the producers still intend to resume work this fall, however, casting will have to move quickly. The role could go to a finalist from the original search or another actor whose schedule is open for the revised production window.

Hurst already had a notable connection to God of War before being cast as Kratos: he voiced Thor in the two Norse-era games. Amazon ordered the first two seasons together, and filming was originally expected to finish by spring 2027. The injury and recast could now push completion to around July 2027, although the first season may still premiere before the entire two-season shoot has wrapped.
