A remake has been as rare as a white raven, but a release date is slowly becoming clear.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard any new news about the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, known simply as KotOR among fans. The game was announced with great fanfare at The Game Awards in 2021, but it has since undergone a troubled development process. The project was originally developed by Aspyr but was later handed over to another studio because Lucasfilm was not satisfied with Aspyr’s work. For a long time, we only knew that the new developer was part of the Embracer Group’s portfolio, which didn’t narrow down the field much. Eventually, it was revealed that the remake is being developed at one of Saber Interactive’s studios. CEO Matthew Karch confirmed in 2024 that the project is alive and well.
Recently, Stephen Totilo reported that Saber’s subsidiary Mad Head Games (Pagan Online, Scars Above) is developing the game, which clarified the situation. But when will we be able to play it? The KotOR subreddit just posted an image from Saber Interactive’s Chief Business Officer, Steve Allison. Allison tentatively listed the remake in the studio’s 2028 game lineup. The image shows what appears to be Allison’s response to a fan concerned that Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 3 would be full of microtransactions.

“My job isn’t to squeeze money from Saber’s products using tactics like that. We are preparing to publish more, and I’m organizing the group for the 2028 lineup (similar to when I came to Telltale in 2010). There will be no microtransactions. This includes Space Marine, Wick, the KotOR remake, and a few unannounced titles. Saber has never pursued microtransactions as a company; it’s not how we do business. We sell the main game with a free DLC plan for the community, and we may do paid DLC. However, we can’t repeat the voice-pack DLC issue with Space Marine 2. The team learned a lot from that before I started here. I didn’t work on Fortnite or Rocket League, but I did fund and oversee the launch of Alan Wake Remastered and Alan Wake 2 through the traditional third-party publishing team in my group. Again, there were no microtransactions. There isn’t much more for me to say except to assure you that this is neither Saber’s approach nor my personal orientation in leading publishing. Space Marine 3 is going to be everything you loved about 2, plus more elements you love,” Allison wrote.
The authenticity of the screenshot has not yet been confirmed, so it should be treated with caution. However, since the game reportedly began development around 2022, 2028 seems like a realistic release date, assuming everything goes smoothly. Alongside KotOR, this lineup would be excellent for Saber. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 3 is sure to attract the attention of millions, and the new John Wick game could also be interesting.
In addition, a spiritual successor is in the works: Fate of the Old Republic, developed by Arcanaut Studios, a team founded by Casey Hudson, the director of the original KotOR.
