Infinity Ward Aims for Even Greater Immersion with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4! [VIDEO]

However, Infinity Ward appears to be planning some divisive changes for this year’s installment of the annual franchise.

Every year, Call of Duty either tries to reinvent the wheel or undo its most recent experiment. In the case of the upcoming Modern Warfare 4, the latter is the goal. The mission of this installment is to live up to the 2019 reimagining of the series in Modern Warfare while correcting the controversial changes introduced in Modern Warfare 2. One of the biggest criticisms was the absurdly strong visual recoil, which made weapon handling feel clunky and slow. This was somewhat corrected in Modern Warfare 3.

In the latest “From the Ward” developer commentary, Infinity Ward outlined its philosophy behind Modern Warfare 4. Weapon designer Cody Pierson explained that the team has been discussing ways to make the game more immersive. The goal is for players to truly step into the operator’s shoes and feel as if they’re standing behind the weapon. This translates to cool features like more realistic depth of field, a genuinely useful improvement over previous games. However, most players will likely continue to turn it off. Muzzle flash effects have been toned down using a creative masking solution — specifically, by cutting out the cloud of smoke that would normally obscure your view. Another feature is the dynamic weapon positioning, which lowers the weapon as you approach a wall or aligns it with a corner while you look around.

Although we believe that Infinity Ward’s changes are quite apt, this detailed analysis has sparked mixed reactions. Some players are reminded of Modern Warfare 2 by the seemingly strong visual recoil and significant wobble of the weapons. In fact, the developer issued a statement on the matter after a fan expressed concern. They have been monitoring early discussions about visual recoil. The beta allows players to try out the game, and the developers are closely monitoring feedback over the two weekends.

It’s too early to judge what using the weapons in Modern Warfare 4 will feel like before we get our hands on them. Every weapon is different, and our settings can also influence the experience. However, it’s clear that Infinity Ward is aware of Modern Warfare 2’s shortcomings while remaining committed to immersion and realism. However, their commitment to these elements undoubtedly surpasses that of the players.
