Xbox Has Also Experienced Network Outages!

After Sony, it was Microsoft’s turn to suffer service failures. The problems prevented several fundamental Xbox functions from operating as intended.

Microsoft acknowledged that parts of its online service were experiencing outages. The Xbox Status page reported a “major outage” affecting Account & Profile, Store & Subscriptions, and Apps & Mobile. According to the Account & Profile status page: “You may not be able to sign in to your Xbox profile, may be disconnected while signed in, or experience other related problems. Features that require signing in, such as most games, apps, and social activity, will not be available.”

The Store & Subscriptions report indicated that users might be unable to find the game they were looking for in the store, while the Apps & Mobile report warned of possible problems when launching applications. All three reports stated that the issue had been identified and that work on a solution was underway, while the outage has since been resolved. “We are aware that some users are encountering errors when attempting to sign in, see their game library, or launch games. Our engineers are actively working to mitigate the issue,” the official Xbox Support account wrote on Twitter.

The Xbox outage followed similar problems with the PlayStation Network last week, when the service went down only a few hours after the launch of the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta. The outage left the service unavailable for several hours, preventing players from accessing the PlayStation Network either on a PlayStation 5 console or through a game requiring a PSN login.

This also demonstrates that when a game requires an internet connection and access to an online network, even if it is a single-player title, everything can become unusable during an outage. If we cannot run something offline from a disc, the fact that we are not playing with other people online makes no difference. This is why Sony faces so much criticism over its planned discontinuation of PlayStation disc production in January 2028, although the company has already made that decision…
