While there are visual improvements, they aren’t the most significant change offered by this new port for new hardware.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is considered one of the most impressive Nintendo Switch games, despite Monolith Soft’s technical limitations resulting in poor image quality in handheld mode and 30 FPS gameplay that often fell short of its target during intense battles. Thus, the game needed a thorough update. These issues have largely been resolved in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, thanks to several significant improvements that enhance the gaming experience. This edition is a must-buy for both returning players and newcomers alike. The port fixes most visual issues and increases the resolution, making Rex and Pyra’s journey through Alrest more beautiful than ever. The most significant improvement is seen in handheld mode. The resolution has increased from the original Nintendo Switch’s modest 378p–540p range to 1080p. Though this isn’t an action-oriented RPG, the 60 FPS gameplay is also notable.

The performance and visual improvements alone would make Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Nintendo Switch 2 worth buying, but the most notable innovations are the quality-of-life refinements, primarily the changes made to field skills. While exploring Alrest, Rex and his companions often encounter obstacles or navigational challenges requiring the active party to include Blades with specific abilities. Because of this, players often had to change their active party composition just to advance, which made exploring the open world cumbersome.

In Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, having one Blade in your party with the necessary field skill, provided it meets the level requirements, makes exploration much more enjoyable. Players don’t have to switch between multiple menus or change their party composition to continue exploring. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for Nintendo Switch 2 brings numerous significant, positive changes. However, the new version of the game comes with a critical bug. An issue, likely caused by scanning certain amiibo, sometimes wipes the third accessory slot that can be purchased for New Game+ mode. It’s probably best to wait before starting a second playthrough until this issue is fixed.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is the second updated release in the series and will be followed later this year by Xenoblade Chronicles 3. With Xenoblade Genesis set to release next year, the entire series will be available on current-generation Nintendo hardware, making the Switch 2 even more appealing to JRPG fans.
