MOVIE NEWS – Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra Jonas are heading deep into the Congo in Bluefly, a sci-fi action thriller directed by Nimród Antal. A covert effort to retrieve a downed aircraft that officially does not exist soon spirals into something far more sinister.

Crowe has shown no interest in easing his workload, moving between the action-heavy Kraven the Hunter, weightier dramas such as Nuremberg and The Weight, and the forthcoming Highlander reboot. His next genre project places him opposite Citadel star Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the high-concept thriller Bluefly.

According to MovieWeb, citing Deadline’s exclusive report, David Frigerio, William Eubank and Carlyle Eubank wrote the screenplay. William Eubank previously directed Underwater, while Carlyle Eubank scripted Muzzle. Frigerio also worked on Crowe’s 2026 feature Beast, a project that gave the Oscar-winning actor a screenwriting credit as well.

The plot follows a UN translator struggling with grief who is drawn into a black operation in the Congolese interior. Working alongside a Special Operations unit, the translator must locate an aircraft whose existence has supposedly never been acknowledged. The team travels upriver through territory controlled by militias, only to discover that the people behind the assignment may never have intended for the wreckage to be brought back.

That setup inevitably carries echoes of a Predator adventure, and the choice of director makes the comparison even harder to miss. Hungarian-born filmmaker Nimród Antal, who helmed 2010’s Predators, will return to the intersection of military action, hostile wilderness and a potentially otherworldly threat.

“It’s the kind of film I live to make — grounded, propulsive, and full of dread,” Antal said.

Antal nevertheless describes the movie as an intense, character-led thriller housed inside an ambitious science-fiction idea. Highland Film Group CEO Arianne Fraser, whose company is handling worldwide rights, expects Crowe and Chopra Jonas to bring both emotional weight and combustible energy to the material. International pre-sales are being introduced at the TIFF market.

MovieWeb suggests that an alien creature could be waiting in the shadows, although no such antagonist has been officially revealed. The protagonist’s bereavement and the mission’s psychological collapse could instead give the film something of the human unease associated with Annihilation. Crowe’s dramatic range, recently displayed again in Nuremberg, combined with Chopra Jonas’s action credentials may help the production balance its emotional and spectacular elements.

No release date, additional cast members or production start have yet been announced for Bluefly.
