MOVIE NEWS – Sam Neill’s last appearance on the big screen will be in Sony and Nintendo’s live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. He completed his work months before his death, and although the production has not identified his character, one theory stands out.

Tributes have continued to honor Sam Neill since his death in July. The New Zealand actor was 78, and his family described the loss as unexpected: his earlier cancer treatment had succeeded, while his recent activity gave no indication that he intended to leave working life behind.

Speaking to 1News, Neill’s longtime agent Philip Grenz said the actor had balanced the operation of his Two Paddocks winery with four productions shot consecutively over the preceding year. Those projects are arriving within a short period. Audiences already knew about the Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich romantic comedy The Last Resort and the blockbuster Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, but the identity of the fourth film remained protected by an unusually secretive production.

His last screen role leads directly to Hyrule

Deadline now reports that the mystery project is Sony and Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda. Director Wes Ball finished principal photography in April, several months before Neill’s passing. Nintendo had named Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda last July; the latest report delivers the first substantial additions to the cast since that announcement.

Uli Latukefu has been chosen to portray Ganondorf, the story’s central villain. Severance actor Dichen Lachman will appear as Impa, Princess Zelda’s protector and adviser, while The Handmaid’s Tale star Yvonne Strahovski has joined in an undisclosed royal role.

The filmmakers have yet to reveal whom Neill plays. Strahovski’s casting as a queen makes Zelda’s father, the King of Hyrule, the most natural guess, but that possibility remains unconfirmed. Should the speculation prove accurate, Neill would provide a seasoned presence alongside the adaptation’s younger leads.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka created the franchise, which debuted in 1986 and has since sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. Sony and Nintendo announced the film in fall 2023. The companies are jointly financing it, with Sony handling distribution.

Despite the scale of the property, Zelda has never received a theatrical feature during its four-decade history. Nintendo enters this project with considerable movie momentum: its animated Mario collaborations with Universal and Illumination became major hits, and April’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie surpassed $1 billion worldwide. Hyrule offers a stranger and more earnest setting than the Mushroom Kingdom, yet the franchise’s reach gives the live-action adaptation a formidable commercial foundation.
