MOVIE NEWS – Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot is increasingly shaping up as a genuine continuation that could bring Mulder and Scully back. The Hulu pilot will introduce a fresh pair of federal agents, yet it also appears designed to keep the original investigators inside the story.

When The X-Files wrapped its eleventh season in 2018, the series seemed destined for another long hibernation. Coogler’s project may now reopen the case: Hulu has commissioned a pilot, Jennifer Yale is attached as showrunner, and Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel are expected to play the new FBI agents at its center.

According to creator Chris Carter, this is not being treated as a clean-slate remake. Carter is involved as a producer and consultant, and he expects Gillian Anderson to return as Dana Scully. David Duchovny’s participation may still depend on negotiations, but Carter is proceeding on the assumption that Fox Mulder will also be part of the new chapter.

New investigators could inherit the cases without replacing the originals

“At least Gillian is coming back, and I assume David will too; Mulder and Scully will be there,” Carter said. That approach would make Coogler’s show a legacy sequel—and potentially a twelfth season in everything but name—rather than an unrelated reinterpretation.

Anderson has already read the pilot and spoken positively about it, while Duchovny has never completely ruled out another return. Season 11 left major plot threads unresolved, so involving both stars could do more than provide nostalgic cameos: it could finally advance the unfinished story.

The franchise also has a second project in motion. An R-rated director’s cut of the 2008 feature The X-Files: I Want to Believe, titled Vrach Frankenshteyn, is on the way. Coogler’s series has no premiere date yet, but the fate of its pilot will determine whether the mythology truly enters a new era.
