MOVIE NEWS – Alan Ritchson has revealed the serious health price he paid to build Jack Reacher’s imposing physique for Amazon’s hit series. The actor says the drastic transformation had lasting consequences and ultimately forced him to undergo surgery.

 
Alan Ritchson already had an imposing build during his Smallville years, but the lead role in Reacher demanded a far more extreme transformation. Over eight months, he went from roughly 93 kilograms to more than 106, eating almost constantly, while estimating that only a little over half of the gain was lean muscle.

The actor says he did not use steroids or testosterone during that initial bulking period, but he still pushed his body far beyond a sensible limit. He left too little time for recovery and continued training through injuries because he had to achieve the instantly recognizable silhouette of Jack Reacher on a compressed schedule.

The consequences became severe after the first season. Ritchson required surgery on the acromioclavicular joint in his shoulder, struggled to breathe properly, and learned from a blood test that overtraining had left his testosterone at virtually undetectable levels. His doctor then recommended hormone replacement therapy, which the actor describes as clinical treatment rather than a shortcut to performance.

The details originally appeared in a 2024 interview with British GQ and resurfaced around the launch of Reacher’s fourth season. Ritchson still trains five days a week and has become an outspoken supporter of medically indicated hormone therapy for middle-aged men, although he presents his own experience as a warning rather than a model to copy.

Reacher owes much of its appeal to the title character’s commanding physical presence, but Ritchson’s account exposes the bodily cost behind that image. The rushed transformation, ignored injuries, and relentless workload ultimately led not only to surgery but also to longer-term medical treatment.
