Dave Bautista Will Play Kratos in Amazon’s God of War Series

MOVIE NEWS – Dave Bautista is taking over the role of Kratos in Amazon’s God of War series after Ryan Hurst suffered an injury. The casting of the Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy star has now been confirmed following weeks of speculation.

The live-action God of War adaptation has gone through an unexpectedly turbulent casting process. Amazon introduced Ryan Hurst as its Kratos in January, but the actor was injured during production and the show was forced to find a new lead.

Bautista may have to reshoot Hurst’s scenes

According to Variety, Dave Bautista has officially secured the role of the Ghost of Sparta. He is expected to join the production in the coming weeks and will also need to reshoot material from episodes Hurst completed before his injury.

The choice makes sense both physically and dramatically, as Bautista’s appearance is close to the older Kratos seen in God of War Ragnarök. Fan reaction has been broadly positive, especially because the actor has already demonstrated in several major productions that he can offer more than straightforward action-star presence.

Two seasons will be filmed back to back

Amazon still plans to shoot the first two seasons consecutively in Vancouver. Production could continue into early 2027, which means the series is unlikely to premiere before sometime in 2028.

Callum Vinson will play Atreus, with Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Ed Skrein as Baldur. The opening two seasons are expected to adapt the events of God of War from 2018 and Ragnarök, placing Bautista at the centre of the franchise’s attempt to reach a new television audience.
