MOVIE NEWS – Andrew Garfield and Paul Greengrass are combining medieval rebellion with the force of a modern thriller in The Uprising.

Two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield plays a courageous commoner known as the Ploughman, who rises against the rule of King Richard II. Opening in cinemas on September 11, 2026, The Uprising dramatizes the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 while also reframing the birth of the Robin Hood myth.

The film was written, directed and produced by Paul Greengrass, the filmmaker behind The Bourne Supremacy and United 93. His documentary-like handheld style and fascination with real events should allow the production to combine political intrigue, large-scale medieval warfare and the immediate physical tension associated with the Bourne films.

In the story, the Ploughman gathers a rebel army that includes the priest John Ball, played by Jamie Bell. Katherine Waterston, Tom Hollander, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller and Dónal Finn also appear, while reports indicate that as many as 5,000 extras and real historical locations were used to recreate 14th-century England.

The campaign’s “Witness the rise of Robin Hood” tagline now openly positions the movie as an origin story for the legendary outlaw. We also explored a more grounded version of the folk hero in our Robin Hood review, and Greengrass’s film may connect that familiar myth to a specific historical rebellion.

Garfield and Greengrass look like a particularly strong match because both excel at physically and emotionally demanding stories. If the director can balance the scale of the battle scenes with the personal stakes of the rebels, The Uprising could become one of the autumn’s most important historical action films.
