Playground Games believes Fable can compete with the major releases of 2027, but the studio did not want to challenge GTA VI directly. Director Ralph Fulton also confirmed that the fantasy RPG was originally targeting October 2026.
Fable is now scheduled for February 23, 2027, placing it close to games such as God of War: Laufey, Persona 4 Revival, and Metro 2039. It will still be a crowded period, but Playground Games considers it far more manageable than its previous October 2026 window.
Speaking to IGN during Gamescom 2026, Ralph Fulton confirmed that the studio had specifically aimed for October rather than simply the broader autumn period. The delay was personally disappointing, but he believes the business and production reasons behind the decision are completely solid.
The autumn calendar became exceptionally crowded, partly because many publishers moved their projects into September and October to avoid the November 19 launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The Blood of Dawnwalker, Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are among the games packed into that short window.
Fulton says Playground Games is not frightened of direct competition because it considers Fable a major release in its own right. The February lineup is therefore acceptable even if several important RPGs and action games arrive during the same month.
We are a major game ourselves, and we are comfortable competing with many others – there is only one we would avoid completely.
The director did not name that single exception, but the context makes it clear that he meant GTA VI. Playground Games therefore chose early 2027 not out of general fear, but because Rockstar’s launch is expected to become an unusually powerful cultural event.
