The action-adventure game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA, spanning fifty years, made an appearance at Gamescom.
It’s a fifty-year saga about men with nowhere to go and their desperate struggle to find a home. Players must use extreme violence to survive and musical talent to thrive as a showman across five cities and eras of modern Japan. San Francisco, 1915. The story begins with a young boy sneaking aboard a mysterious ship in the dead of night. His name is Makoto Daito. Born to an American father and a Japanese mother, Makoto faces harsh persecution simply because of his Asian heritage. After losing both parents, Makoto finds himself completely alone. In a desperate act, he decides to risk everything and travel to his mother’s birthplace. If the United States won’t accept him, perhaps Japan will.
With nothing but the shirt on his back, Makoto soon learns that his voyage across the Pacific comes at a price and will change the course of his life forever. The story unfolds in an alternate version of Japan, immersing you in five sprawling cities modeled after real locations of their respective eras:
One of these cities is 1915 Kokura, Fukuoka, home to one of the world’s largest foundries. This smoke-scorched town is bursting with hard-driven, fiery workers. Kure, Hiroshima, in 1929: A port town dominated by Japan’s largest naval arsenal and heavily influenced by Yakuza organizations. Minami, Osaka in 1943: The largest entertainment district in western Japan, set against the backdrop of a world at war. Atami, Shizuoka (1951): a bustling seaside getaway synonymous with tourism in postwar Japan. Shinjuku, Tokyo (1965): Japan’s most iconic pleasure district—a city of swirling, unpredictable chaos.
In these turbulent times, survival means doing whatever it takes. Experience the struggle through an ever-changing combat system that feels alive and is full of raw brutality. You won’t just control Makoto Daito; you’ll become him. Move his left and right sides independently and instinctively as you attack, defend, and force your way to victory. Follow a jab with a crushing blow. Send enemies flying with a charged attack. Tackle them while they stagger. Pin them to the ground. Unleash a relentless flurry of punches. In Makoto’s world, nothing is off the table. You can block enemy strikes with one hand and instantly counter with the other. Reading their moves and creating your own openings is key to coming out on top. You’ll also master and enhance a wide array of weapons, such as knives, hammers, and katanas, as you fight your way through era after violent era.
In the early chapters of the story, Makoto’s guide and mentor discovers his hidden talent for music. Before long, he not only sings a tune or two, but also steps into the role of a showman. He produces a variety of incredible shows throughout Japan. To stage these shows, Makoto gathers rumors from the streets to scout talented singers and performers. Then, he heads out into town to create new music, collecting any and every sound he can find: the swish of a broom, the snoring of a sleepy neighbor, the rumble of passing trains, distant animal cries, and the grunts and growls of his enemies.
Makoto crafts original tracks by combining these sounds, creating brand new music for the whole nation to hear. He then chooses the setlist, arranges the band, assigns the cast, and designs the production, including the lighting colors and staging, to bring each show to life. As you tour the country with him, staging performances and captivating audiences, you’ll witness his rise from rags to riches as a master showman. Will the relentless determination of two men racing through fifty years of chaos change the future as we know it?
Stranger Than Heaven will be released on January 15 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
