TECH NEWS – It seems that graphics cards based on the Ampere architecture from two generations ago are unable to keep up with Nvidia’s latest technology.

The latest DLSS technology reportedly works on older RTX graphics cards, but the performance drop is too significant to ensure a smooth gaming experience. Several users have confirmed that the upcoming DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology can run on older RTX GPUs, including the GeForce RTX 3000 series. Recently, we saw modders gain access to the leaked DLL file, enabling the technology in games before its official release. Soon after, some modders enabled DLSS 5 on RTX 4000 series cards. Until now, it wasn’t clear whether Nvidia’s new DLSS technology would work on older GPUs. On Twitter, @flovreq confirmed that DLSS 5 Neural Rendering works on the RTX 3080, for example. The user demonstrated the unofficial implementation in Deep Rock Galactic.

The video shows the game running at 138 FPS. As soon as the user enabled DLSS Neural Rendering, however, the FPS dropped to 4, representing a 97% decrease in performance and making the game practically unplayable. There is also a significant impact on frame timing: enabling DLSS 5 increases frame pacing from 7–8 ms to 260 ms. Unlike the 40–50% performance drop seen on RTX 5000 and RTX 4000 cards, the RTX 3000 series cannot run the game properly with DLSS 5 Neural Rendering enabled. Currently, the RTX 3000 series cannot maintain the required FPS for the game. However, keep in mind that this implementation is not yet ready for release on the RTX 3000 series. There has been no official confirmation from Nvidia regarding whether DLSS 5 will be available for older GPUs.

Currently, only the RTX 5000 series is scheduled to receive DLSS 5 Neural Rendering this fall. Older models may or may not receive the feature, even though Nvidia paved the way for older RTX GPUs prior to the introduction of DLSS 4.5.
