This game was originally released exclusively for the Xbox 360 when Microsoft was still collaborating with Japanese developers.

The classic RPG Blue Dragon now has an unofficial PC port called Re:Blue. Blue Dragon was developed by Mistwalker for the Xbox 360. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, founded this studio. Nobuo Uematsu, known for his work on the Final Fantasy series, composed the soundtrack, and Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, designed the characters. re:Blue is a static recompilation that runs natively on Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is also Steam Deck-compatible. This allows the game to run at higher frame rates and with custom resolutions and paves the way for mod support.

The port was led by project lead and developer Crack (Tomcl7), with help from Rc0ld. At the end of the teaser video announcing the port’s release is a tribute to Akira Toriyama, who passed away in 2024. The re:Blue code is available for free download, but installation requires all three Blue Dragon DVDs or their disc images. Thanks to Blue Dragon’s backward compatibility, the game can be played on modern Xbox consoles (Xbox One and Xbox Series), though this version lacks the customization options of the re:Blue PC port.

The PC port used the ReXGlue SDK, an Xbox 360 recompilation runtime and toolkit that converts Xbox 360 PowerPC code into C++. This makes the code easy to read and run on modern platforms. Interestingly, the popularity of PC ports of classic games increased after the release of the port of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, known as Ship of Harkinian.

This is a form of game preservation. This is especially true for games released exclusively on a single platform. Blue Dragon is one such game, and it runs better on PC than on the Xbox 360.
