The game will also feature a reputation system, making it more sophisticated than its predecessor.
The line between satire and reality has always been thin. But it could be worse. We could be the ones who have to write the satire or the script for Grand Theft Auto VI. That would certainly be a major challenge, especially now. But perhaps we can trust Rockstar. They are capable of crafting meta-commentary on the fictional state of Leonida, based on Florida and the United States as a whole. Of course, there will always be people writing satire about the world around them, but the key is that they do it well—and that it stands the test of time. Rockstar surely wants people to be enjoying and playing Grand Theft Auto VI well into the future.
“Many people ask, “How do you deal with satire in today’s world?” I think there’s always stuff to satirize. As long as humans are humans, they will find ways to satirize what we do. We have to be careful that what we choose to satirize won’t feel dated. I think broader topics are okay to satirize, but very specific political issues or memes will quickly become outdated. We think a lot about the way our characters speak so that they’re not using extremely contemporary slang. Even though our characters are a certain age, they need to feel somewhat timeless,” says Rockstar North’s co-studio head, Ron Nelson, in an interview with IGN.
Thankfully, this probably means that we won’t see any brain rot or references to the “orange man.” Sometimes, art doesn’t have to imitate life exactly. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but after a major mistake, many small positive changes can make things feel better. Grand Theft Auto VI essentially took the honor system from Red Dead Redemption 2 and tweaked it. While Arthur Morgan could game the system by committing heinous crimes and then becoming everyone’s favorite again, Jason and Lucia won’t have it so easy. In addition to the classic wanted level, you’ll also have to keep an eye on your criminal profile.
Bad deeds don’t necessarily ruin your criminal profile. If violence is the only logical and safe next step, then sure, shoot. But what if we’re the aggressors or escalate the situation beyond reasonable limits? The NPCs will remember. One way to restore balance, however, is for Lucia or Jason to perform small acts of kindness. For example, if we throw trash in the trash cans or are kind to animals, it will work in our favor. This makes Jason and Lucia’s actions more realistic. It’s also smart not to act like total jerks while walking around Leonida. We have to worry not only about the police attacking us but also about certain locals starting a fight if we provoke them.
“There isn’t a right or wrong way to play this game. However, consistent actions may impact how the world reacts to you and how the narrative plays out. You play as criminals on the run, and the narrative makes it seem like they should do whatever they need to do to avoid drawing unnecessary attention, even though that doesn’t always happen. In previous Grand Theft Auto games, I think you were a bit all-powerful. You were the only one with an invisible arsenal. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in Grand Theft Auto VI is not like that,” Nelson added.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
