The man who essentially created the Mafia franchise believes that the Rockstar and Take-Two game isn’t on solid ground in terms of its story.
Grand Theft Auto VI has received widespread acclaim from gamers around the world. Players were impressed by Rockstar Games’ excellent work, from the graphics and gameplay to the vast open world. The director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, however, was not particularly impressed. He criticized Grand Theft Auto VI, saying that the game has no compelling story. In his opinion, the main characters are boring, which doesn’t do the story any favors.
According to Vávra, a good story requires complex characters, internal conflicts, and strong motivations. He said he didn’t see any of these in the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer. Instead, he said he saw nothing more than a fantastic tech demo. He praised the technological marvel and the open world that no one has ever dreamed of, but that’s where the positives end. Vávra called the main characters two boring sociopaths who commit mass murders chaotically.
He added that the story lacks appeal and will only be popular in multiplayer mode or with players who enjoy random activities. Historically, the Grand Theft Auto series hasn’t been known for its deeply developed plots. Instead, the focus has been on exploration and entertaining, chaotic gameplay, which Grand Theft Auto VI delivers. Furthermore, the game’s story spans 80 hours of gameplay, so a 26-minute demo is too short to judge the entire plot.

“In my humble opinion, and that of anyone who has ever written a good story, a good story needs internal and external conflict, complex characters with interesting motives, a consistent and logically functioning world, a theme, a point or “message” (in the good sense of the word), and interesting and likable characters. What I saw was a fantastic tech demo bordering on a technological miracle and an open world unlike anything ever created. However, the characters were uninteresting sociopaths chaotically committing mass murder for other sociopaths and money. There was zero story hook for me. It will surely work for multiplayer and for people who want to do crazy, random things. But there was much more before. Hate me — I’m used to it ,” Vávra wrote.
It’s hard to argue with that—maybe there’s something to it.
