MOVIE NEWS – Monsters, blood and spectacular tricks are not necessarily what makes a horror film truly frightening. According to Rob Savage (Host, Dashcam, The Boogeyman), the most important special effect in his new film Other Mommy will be its star, Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar, The Eyes of Tammy Faye). The Oscar-winning actress will also frighten audiences in a dual role.

Based on Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, the author of the novel behind the horror film Bird Box, the story centers on eight-year-old Bela (Arabella Olivia Cark). The girl comes into contact with a mysterious supernatural entity she calls Other Mommy. The creature earns that name for a reason: it looks exactly like Bela’s real mother. Chastain plays both Ursula and her demonic double, which is determined to enter the human world, presumably with anything but good intentions.

Savage says the Oscar-winning star’s performance had to create the horror itself: viewers must be able to tell solely from Chastain’s behavior whether they are looking at the loving mother or the supernatural being wearing her appearance.

The supporting cast also features Jay Duplass (Transparent, The Chair), Dichen Lachman (Severance, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark).
