Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Won’t Need Sequels – Creative Assembly Is Building One Expanding Sandbox

Creative Assembly is designing Total War: Warhammer 40,000 as a strategy sandbox that can grow for years. The studio says the game’s true experience will unfold inside one continuously expanding universe rather than through separate sequels.

Speaking at Gamescom 2026, Creative Assembly lead producer Dave Petry explained that the first Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is not intended to launch another trilogy. Instead, the team wants to establish a durable foundation that can receive major releases and updates of different sizes over a long period.

According to Petry, the unified sandbox is the “true experience.” Factions, campaigns and gameplay systems will therefore become parts of the same evolving strategic space instead of being split across isolated games.

The initial lineup includes the Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Aeldari and Orks. The Space Wolves have already been confirmed for a later release, while the Genestealer Cults and Chaos remain obvious candidates for future expansions.

The approach builds on lessons learned from the fantasy Total War: Warhammer games, but this time Creative Assembly is planning a single long-lived platform from the outset. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently scheduled for 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
