MOVIE NEWS – Just over four weeks after Hayden Panettiere died at the age of 36, new details have emerged about the circumstances surrounding her death. Citing multiple law enforcement sources, TMZ reports that the Heroes and Scream star may have taken an oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl on the morning she died.
The entertainment world was shaken in mid-August when news broke that Hayden Panettiere had died at only 36 years old. Her representative described her as “an incredible light and a force of nature” while expressing profound sadness over the loss of such a young entertainer. Panettiere enjoyed a lengthy career in film and television, becoming particularly well known for playing Claire Bennet in Heroes and Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise. More than four weeks after her death, new information has now emerged about what may have led to the tragedy.
TMZ, citing multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation, reports that Panettiere may have taken an oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl. According to the report, the actress had a longtime dealer in Los Angeles who allegedly supplied her with black-market prescription medication, including oxycodone. Reports indicate that Panettiere took several drugs while flying from Los Angeles to South Carolina the day before her death. Authorities currently believe she may have taken an OxyContin pill containing fentanyl the following morning.
The circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death are currently being investigated by the DEA in both South Carolina and Los Angeles, along with South Carolina law enforcement. According to TMZ’s report, a major part of the investigation concerns where the pill may have originated and who supplied it to the actress. The newly reported information reflects investigators’ current working theory rather than the conclusion of a completed official investigation. The case remains under investigation.
Panettiere’s personal struggles had become public knowledge over the last several years, but that has done little to lessen the shock surrounding her death at such a young age. Former co-stars and directors have spent the weeks since her passing sharing memories of working with her, with many describing her as exceptionally kind, dedicated, and hardworking. Their tributes have focused not only on her best-known performances but also on the person they knew away from the cameras. Many have emphasized how difficult it has been to process her death.
About a week and a half after Panettiere died, several of her former Heroes co-stars reunited for an event honoring her memory. The gathering was organized by writer and co-executive producer Bryan Fuller and included Santiago Cabrera, Jack Coleman, Greg Grunberg, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Masi Oka, Adrian Pasdar, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and others. Several cast members also shared tributes on social media, reflecting on their time working alongside her. Panettiere became one of the show’s most recognizable faces through her role as Claire Bennet.
Panettiere also spent years in a major role on Nashville, while one of her best-known later film performances came as Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise. She began her career as a child actor before successfully transitioning into adult roles across both television and movies. Her death struck audiences especially hard because she had been working to reach a more stable place in her life and move beyond earlier struggles. The tragedy also came only days before news emerged of several other major deaths across the entertainment industry.
MovieWeb’s staff extended its condolences to Hayden Panettiere’s family, friends, loved ones, and fans. The actress was only 36 years old. The investigation into her death remains ongoing, meaning further official information may still emerge beyond the details currently being reported.
