Blizzard Entertainment is, of course, still keeping quiet about the finer details, which is somewhat understandable when you consider the game’s planned release date.
The story of Diablo V takes place in a desolate world ravaged by a demonic overlord. Just like in previous Diablo games, you’ll be able to team up with friends. In a group interview with PC Gamer, Joe Shely, the game’s lead director, confirmed that Diablo V will fully support multiplayer mode. Just like Diablo IV, it can be played solo or in multiplayer mode, and you can expect to be able to play through all the content with your friends. However, specific details regarding multiplayer mode, such as whether players will be able to encounter other players in the open world as in the endgame of Diablo IV, were not mentioned. According to Blizzard, we’ll have to wait for this information as we get closer to the 2029 release date.
One of the biggest changes setting Diablo V apart from Diablo IV is the return of procedurally generated overworlds and dungeons. The goal is to show that the world is constantly changing as we travel with our caravan and purge the continent of Diablo’s corruption. This could dramatically change how we interact with other players after finishing the campaign, especially if everyone experiences their own version of Sanctuary.
Encountering a group of other players could shatter the illusion that we’re lone heroes battling the forces of hell. Blizzard says that Diablo V will incorporate much of the experience gained from Diablo IV. However, it’s unclear whether this will include elements such as worldwide events and major bosses. Diablo IV is also packed with skins and cosmetic items. If these make it into the new game, it suggests that there will certainly be some way to show other heroes what gear we’re wearing.
However, it seems that we won’t be getting any concrete answers to this question just yet. Blizzard will post regular updates on the game’s development next year to gauge fan response. Perhaps one of these posts will clarify the scope of Diablo V’s multiplayer mode and whether it will build on what Diablo IV started.
