Gordon Freeman’s adventures could have been something else other than a shooter.
Valve, who don’t seem to go from two to three, had some concepts and prototypes ready for Half-Life 3. Andrew Reiner, Game Informer’s executive editor has talked about it in a new podcast.
Reiner said that „a developer with reliable information” told him that there were multiple prototypes have been made for the next Half-Life, mostly done by four or five people. One of the concepts were a real-time strategy (?!), and another one could have been a much more advanced action adventure game with real actors, similar to Night Trap. You can hear Reiner talk about this subject at around 4:10 in the video.
It could have been interesting if Half-Life 2 Episode Three (or Half-Life 3) had turned to an RTS from the FPS genre. Why did Valve seemingly give up on their normal route with the franchise…?
