Will The PlayStation 4 Get „Defeated” Next Year?

An analyst company thinks that the PlayStation 4 will have a competitor that will be sold more than Sony‘s console.

Strategy Analytics‘ 2019 forecast says the Nintendo Switch will sell 17.3 million units, which means Nintendo could return to the forefront ten years after the Wii-craze. Strategy Analytics (shortened to SA from now on) predicts 17.1 million for the PlayStation 4, and roughly 10 million for the Xbox One, respectively. The company says there will be 46 million sales this year, which is the highest number in eight years, and 45% North American homes, and 20% of European ones have a console according to SA.

They predict a 10% decrease year-on-year for the console market’s revenue in 2019, as they think there will be a price cut – with the PlayStation 4, we can see it happening -, and the market should reach the 2018 levels in 2013, when Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft will all have next-gen hardware.

„Contrary to some expectations, the global TV games console market remains healthy. Many pundits have written it off over the years, for reasons ranging from the emergence of cloud gaming to the dominance of mobile devices and the arrival of VR, but it refuses to die. There is an argument that the enduring appeal of the TV games console, now in its sixth decade, continues to demonstrate the weaknesses and limitations of alternative games platforms,” David Watkins, director at SA, said.

„Console upgrade cycles continue, and the three-way battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, which has been raging now for the best part of two decades, shows no sign of abating as each platform owner discusses its plans for updates and new generations. In partnership with developers and driven by the ever-rising expectations of consumers we fully expect these platform owners to continue to push the boundaries of the large screen gaming experience for many more years to come,” Chirag Upadhyay, an SA senior analyst, added.

So the Nintendo Switch might outsell the PlayStation 4 next year, which makes sense: the PS4 has been on the market for five years, while the Switch has yet to reach its second birthday (in March 2019).
