Nintendo probably backs the project (just like how they did with Bayonetta 2, and the big N now also foots the bill for the third instalment).

Astral Chain was an excellent game – it became the game of the year on our website in 2019, and that says a lot about how PlatinumGames found a ton of success with its Switch-exclusive title. Now, Hideki Kamiya (Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Scalebound…) posted something on Twitter (he tweets a lot, keep in mind), saying nothing more than „Astral Chain 2,” and he did it in English no less, even though he tends to post in Japanese most of the time (meaning it’d have read アストラルチェイン2). We’re not going to link it, as the Japanese director has deleted the tweet, but  the Internet doesn’t forget.

Is that a Photoshop? The answer is no: even Google cached it, and you can’t fake this. Kamiya thus posted it before removing it… and possibly for a good reason.

We could say that one of the founders of PlatinumGames is trolling us, and that wouldn’t be far from the truth, because he does seem to enjoy doing that, but now, the timing looks suspicious. The Australian age rating board has rated something called Astral Chain Duty Striker. We don’t know much about it (so no info about the release date or target platform), but PlatinumGames is possibly planning behind the scenes. We’re not blaming them: the first game was a highly enjoyable experience, and the studio’s relation with Nintendo seems to be pretty good.

Nothing is official, though, but we have heard rumours about a new Nintendo Direct, although it wasn’t held last weekend. If it does happen, they might even announce Astral Chain Duty Striker, and then, they should show some new details about Bayonetta 3, as it’s been a while since Kamiya said the development is progressing well.
