Sony’s Controllers Gain A Lot Of Traction On Steam

In general, more people are using controllers nowadays, but Sony’s devices have doubled their market share recently.

Gabe Newell’s digital storefront announced official DualSense support on Steam. By adding the new Sony controller to the Steam Input API, we get „seamless player experience with correct glyphs for all devices, including any remapping; support for advanced features such as motion controls, rumble, trackpads, additional buttons,” and „updates just work. Without any additional work required of the developer, when new features and/or devices are added to the API, they will “just work” with these titles.” (Unlike Todd Howard’s games without fan-made mods.) However, adaptive triggers don’t work yet.

A point of interest is within what Valve said about controller usage in general, pointing out how Sony’s controllers (such as the DualShock 4 and the DualSense) are now more used than two years ago: „In the past two years, the number of daily average users playing a Steam game with a controller has more than doubled, with millions enjoying the growing catalogue of controller-friendly titles every day. In controller friendly games, the percentage of players for that game that uses a controller can easily be 60 per cent or higher.

Some games, such as skateboarding games, have well over 90 per cent of their players using controllers in-game. The growth in controller usage has been even higher among players using PlayStation controllers, which has grown in the past two years from 10.9 per cent of controller play sessions to 21.6 per cent of all controller sessions across Steam,” Valve wrote.

A good controller matters a lot, especially if it’s a plug-and-play solution: if you can hook it up to your PC without having to resort to mapping the keys and the configuration – it’s comfortable and helpful. Sony’s benefitting PC users, and we’re not talking about PlayStation Now streaming.
