Lucasfilm (=Disney) has revived the brand that was formerly related to its games.
Lucasfilm Games‘ logo will be seen in upcoming Star Wars titles, as we can read on Star Wars’ official website. The name will be seen on multiple social media platforms. According to the post, „Lucasfilm’s legacy in gaming stretches back decades, and with Lucasfilm and the galaxy far, far away entering a new and unprecedented phase of creativity, so will the world of Lucasfilm Games – developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry.” Lucasfilm’s game development arm was founded in 1982, renamed to LucasArts in 1990 (you might remember Tim Schafer’s work from here – he’s now finishing up Psychonauts 2 at the Microsoft-owned Double Fine). Disney acquired them along with Lucasfilm in 2012.
However, LucasArts was effectively closed in 2013, as all the members were laid off, the developments were stopped (Star Wars Battlefront 3?), and the business was turned into a licensing arm. Electronic Arts and the mouse empire tied a deal in 2013 to develop games with the Star Wars license. If it doesn’t get renewed, it will expire in 2023, and in that case, the re-establishment of Lucasfilm Games would suddenly make a lot more sense.
Meanwhile, Star Wars Battlefront II’s actors (who formed Iden Versio, Admiral Versio, and Del Meeko), are preparing for something. We read on Reddit that after Star Wars Battlefront II’s support ended in 2020, on Twitter, T.J. Ramini (Deel Meeko) and Anthony Skordi (Admiral Versio) talked about working on an unannounced title together. Skordi shared a video where Luke Skywalker interacted with Del Meeko in Star Wars Battlefront II.
All three of them were in Los Angeles in November, presumably working on the campaign of Star Wars Battlefront III for the mocap and voice acting work required (and especially the latter takes more time due to security measures introduced due to the coronavirus global pandemic). As late 2021 will see the arrival of the next Battlefield game, we should expect the next Battlefront in late 2022… by DICE’s LA studio?
Nothing is official yet, though.
