Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt RED’s Studio Head Responds To Schreier’s Article

Adam Badowski has responded to the Bloomberg report that we also discussed the other day.

Badowski responded on Twitter to Jason Schreier’s article. It claimed that Cyberpunk 2077, which was announced in 2012, after its reveal, „the company was then still mainly focused on its last title and full development didn’t start until late 2016, employees said. That was when CD Projekt essentially hit the reset button, according to people familiar with the project.” The 2018 demo, which showed off many of the game’s promised features, was allegedly entirely faked: „CD Projekt hadn’t yet finalized and coded the underlying gameplay systems, which is why so many features, such as car ambushes, were missing from the final product. Developers said they felt like the demo was a waste of months that should have gone toward making the game,” the article reads. Until 2016, the game was planned to have a third-person perspective.

Badowski rejects Bloomberg’s characterization of the E3 2018 demo of the game, claiming that it reflects the non-linear process of game development and was labelled as a work in progress, adding that „our final game looks and plays way better than what that demo ever was.” He also says that a group of twenty employees is too small to claim that Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t ready to launch in 2020, making this claim somewhat unfair. He named the sources unreliable due to the anonymity (even though it’s common practice, as the employees in question want to keep their jobs and stable life – if they allowed Schreier to reveal their names, they might have already been fired by CDPR).

Badowski also responded to what Schreier wrote (the non-Polish employees felt uncomfortable when people around them spoke Polish). He says that English is mandated in the official company communication, but it’s also alright to speak the employees’ native language if they casually speak to each other, which is reasonable, given how CDPR employs people of 44 nationalities. „If the question is if it’s hard to move to another country, sometimes culture, and work and live there, then the answer is yes, but that’s universal to every company all over the world, and we’re doing what we can to ease that transition,” writes Badowski.

DFC Intelligence, a market analyst company, published a report, and it hints that CDPR has tarnished its situation so badly that they opened the door to being acquired: „Releasing the console versions filed with bugs would have even been okay if consumers knew what they were getting into. In today’s market, video game consumers are smart and willing to accept early access to games filled with bugs. However, they want to be told upfront that they are playing an unfinished product.

CD Projekt stock dropped 50% in December. This is unacceptable for a company launching a flagship, defining product. A larger public company would have been able to avoid this with basic public relations and marketing. The irony is that while CD Projekt’s reputation has been stained, Cyberpunk 2077 is likely to still be a huge long-term success. Unfortunately, CD Projekt’s reputation has been tarnished. The company now becomes one to watch as an acquisition candidate. This was the case where the marketing and publishing of a larger company would have worked wonders,” DFC wrote.

This could be interesting for them.
