The PS5 continues to beat the records of its predecessor in Japan and worldwide. We also present the UK top 20 games list for August.
The PlayStation 5 isn’t even a year old yet, but Sony’s next-generation console continues to break all the PS4 records set in its lifetime. The PS5 has passed the 1,000,000 UK sales mark faster than any previous PlayStation console, according to figures shared by Games Industry.
One million consoles were sold after 39 weeks on sale, beating the PS4 record by three weeks, thanks to a flurry of new console shipments arriving in the islands this summer. PS5 sales in the UK were slower than PS4 until July, given the general lack of new consoles. With this milestone, the PS5 repeats its recent success in Japan, where it also crossed the one million sales mark faster than the PS4.
Looking at the August total, 151,500 consoles were sold in the UK last month, bringing the year to 1.4 million. That’s a third more sales than in 2020, in all likelihood, thanks to the new generation. The PS5 was the best-selling console in August, followed by the Nintendo Switch, whose sales were slightly down in July. The Xbox X and S series were third.
Moving on from consoles to video games, the best-selling game of August was one you wouldn’t have guessed… Well, not really. It’s Grand Theft Auto V, which hasn’t disappeared from the charts even after eight years since its release. The second best-selling game was the PlayStation-exclusive Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, released on PS5 in August. Rounding out the podium is FIFA 21, another name that will surprise no one in this field.
Here is the list of the 20 best-selling games in the UK in August, taking physical and digital sales into account. With that said, keep in mind that Nintendo does not share digital sales figures.
