Jim Ryan has had another questionable statement: while he wants more people to experience the PlayStation games, he threw consoles under the bus.
Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, gave a new interview to Gamesindustry, where he has had the following comments: “I see no reason why gaming can’t be as ubiquitous as music, movies or TV shows. When you think about the implications of that for the people who make games and those who play games, that’s potentially really amazing and powerful. […]
I believe the PlayStation 5 will be Sony’s biggest and best, and most beloved yet. I hope that will happen. I would also like to see a world where tens of millions of people can enjoy the games we make at PlayStation. Perhaps hundreds of millions of people. Right now, success with the current console model, a great PlayStation hit, you’re talking ten or 20 million people being able to play that game.
We’re talking about games stacking up against music; we’re talking about games stacking up against movies. Almost limitless audiences can enjoy music and movies. And I think some of the art that our studios are making is some of the finest entertainment that has been made anywhere in the world. And to kind of gate the audience for the beautiful art, fantastic entertainment that our studios are making… to gate the audience for that at 20 or 30 million, frustrates me. I would love to see a world where hundreds of millions of people can enjoy those games,” Jim Ryan said.
In other words, he considers consoles as a limiting factor, and it also feels like he is somewhat jealous about the Xbox Game Pass, as Microsoft managed to step outside the traditional console borders with the subscription service. Let’s not forget about the cloud either: Sony works with the Redmond-based company on future streaming technologies, which could help “the blues” a lot.
Still, thinking in hundreds of millions might not be a viable option, especially for exclusive games. Perhaps Jim Ryan is a little too confident?
