MOVIE NEWS – Dune: Part 2 is expected to begin filming in July 2022, well ahead of its 2023 release date.
Denis Villeneuve’s version of Frank Herbert’s Dune iconic sci-fi novel finally debuted in cinemas and on HBO Max just a few weeks ago and has quickly proven to be the adaptation fans have long been waiting for. As Paul Atreides, Timothée Chalamet leads a star-studded cast including Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Zendaya. Dune opened to a solid $41 million and has already grossed $330.4 million worldwide at writing.
Even before its release, Villeneuve’s Duna was notable for splitting the powerful novel into two parts. Villeneuve explained that this was to properly explore the expansive world Herbert created, which has often been difficult for previous adaptations to master. Dune: Part 2 was not guaranteed when the first film arrived, but positive reviews, solid box office numbers and impressive broadcast performance paved the way for a greenlight a few days later. While two years seems like a long way off at this point, it’s not a huge gap compared to other big-screen franchises. Assuming production will last until the end of 2022, that should give Villeneuve and co. Plenty of time to complete the film before October 2023.
Warner Bros. did not allow Dune: Part 1 and Part 2 to shoot back to back, but Villeneuve did not sit idle while waiting for the sequel to be approved. Villeneuve confirmed earlier this year that he was working on the script for Dune: Part 2, and while it may not yet be finished, the creative team should be confident that it can be completed by the middle of next year. The next few months will likely bring some casting announcements as new characters are added.
