Kathleen Kennedy has teased future projects involving characters from the Star Wars sequel trilogy
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who has just extended her contract with the company for another three years, has hinted in a new interview that the Star Wars world hasn’t seen the last of sequel heroes Rey, Finn and Poe. While there don’t yet appear to be solid plans for the Resistance heroes concluding the saga, it seems Lucasfilm is interested in extending their stories.
Kennedy responded to the question of sequel characters in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. “Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,” she said of Daisy Ridley’s Rey, Oscar Isaac’s Poe and John Boyega’s Finn. “They will live on, and those are conversations that are happening with the creative team as well.”
Since Rise of Skywalker launched to a poor critical response in 2019, the Star Wars franchise has pivoted to explore its galaxy through Disney+ TV shows, including the upcoming Boba Fett Book and the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Rogue Squadron, the film intended to be the next Star Wars cinematic release after Rise of Skywalker, has recently been pulled from Disney’s production schedule due to conflicts with director Patty Jenkins’ schedule.
It is unclear whether Lucasfilm wants to continue the sequel characters’ stories in new films, Disney+ TV shows, or animated form. As reported by Slash Movie, none of the sequel’s stars seems particularly interested in reprising their Star Wars roles, especially if it was produced for the small screen. Oscar Isaac and John Boyega have openly said they weren’t interested in starring in Disney+ shows, while Daisy Ridley has expressed that she believes Rise of Skywalker was a “great closure” to Rey’s story.
It is possible that the trio could be recast in aged roles or portrayed in animated shows as was done with the prequel to the adjacent Clone Wars trilogy in 2008. In fact, Poe Dameron has already appeared as a supporting character in Star Wars: Resistance. The animated show also featured characters such as General Hux, Captain Phasma and even General Leia.
